It's World Water Day | Get Involved And Win!

Today is the day! Today is the United Nations World Water Day! Each year on March 22 people like you and me around the world are honoring water!  This year the focus is Wastewater.

What about Wastewater and why?

What: Talking about, learning about, and being active in ways to reduce and reuse wastewater.

Why: Over 80% of wastewater pollution comes from our homes, our cities, our industries and our agriculture, so it is our responsibility to monitor, reclaim, or reuse it. Untreated wastewater often flows back to nature polluting the environment and losing valuable nutrients and other recoverable materials.

Let’s start with some cold hard facts from the United Nations website:

  • Globally, over 80% of the wastewater generated by society flows back into the ecosystem without being treated or reused. (Sato et al, 2013)
  • 1.8 billion people use a source of drinking water contaminated with feces, putting them at risk of contracting cholera, dysentery, typhoid and polio. Unsafe water, poor sanitation and hygiene cause around 842,000 deaths each year. (WHO/UNICEF 2014/WHO 2014)
  • The opportunities for exploiting wastewater as a resource are enormous. Safely managed wastewater is an affordable and sustainable source of water, energy, nutrients and other recoverable materials.

It says “we”, you and I, have enormous opportunities to safely manage wastewater that are both affordable and sustainable! In fact, one of the world’s sustainable goals, Sustainable Goal #6, states “to ensure availability and sustainability of water and sanitation of water FOR ALL by 2030.” This year’s focus on Wastewater falls perfectly within this goal. One of the several targets of Sustainable Goal #6; actually states “halve the proportion of untreated wastewater and increase water recycling and safe reuse.”

OK, we know what and we know why, so how can we get involved?

  1. Participate in the EarthEcho Water Challenge (March 22-December) –   Visit their website to review the steps you need to take to complete the challenge and conduct your own basic water monitoring efforts of local waterbodies.  Once done, share your findings on their site, as well as with us by submitting pictures and stories here, or by posting to our twitter account @ysiinc #World Water Day.  All those submitted will be entered to win some YSI swag and also a chance to appear in our globally distributed publication, “Mission Water” - that focuses on the world's most current water issues.
  2. Get Talking! Discuss the issues we are facing with your friends, family, coworkers, or the person behind you at the grocery story. Share this information on your Facebook, Twitter, and other social media accounts. Encourage them to take the Water Challenge. Awareness is always the first step towards solving Trash-Pick-Up.pnga problem!
  3. Don’t use water from your tap, just for today. Drink the water already in your fridge, load the dishwasher, but don’t run it, sort the laundry, but don’t start the washer. Wait one day without using any running water, and give yourself a chance to appreciate this precious resource.
  4. Donate safe water to communities that don’t have access to it. Monetary donations can help get safe water to families. Visit the Enviro Stewards website to learn how you can donate.
  5. Pick up litter. This one is easy. Make it a work break outing, a family activity before or after dinner tonight, or be mindful as you take your walk later. Picking up litter from your community’s waterways will prevent it from ending up in a river or lake, just causing more damage to our water and environment.  All waterways will eventually end up in a river, lake or ocean. Let’s do our part by cleaning up our local areas.

YSI will continue working right alongside with you by not only developing and providing state of the art water monitoring instrumentation and technologies but also thru Xylem Watermark efforts. YSI/Xylem is very excited to partner with EarthEcho (the same group responsible for the Water Monitoring Challenge above) to work towards solving the world’s water issues.  A quick snapshot of what our employees have accomplished so far is below. We can’t wait to do more!

Ok, let’s not take up anymore of your time, let’s get out there and start celebrating World Water Day!  Remember, today is one very special day, but for Sustainable Goal #6, along with other Sustainable Goals to be met, we need to do our part every day. There are dozens of sites and groups to get involved with year around; a simple Google search in your area will start you in the right direction.
