  • FAQs
    1. How is HydroRIG different from a data logger?

HydroRIG is a remote intelligent gateway that combines the functions of a data logger and modem into a single device. Unlike standard data loggers, which require manual settings and data communication configuration, HydroRIG automatically packages sensor data and uses its built-in modem to send data directly to HydroSphere for instant real-time data.

    2. What is HydroSphere?

HydroSphere is a cloud-based platform that simplifies the management and visualization of water quality data. It enables users to create customizable dashboards, set up data-driven alarms, and access their monitoring sites from any web-enabled device. Since its launch in March 2020, it has grown to support thousands of connected connected devices, offering users a scalable and robust solution for real-time water quality monitoring.

    3. Can HydroRIG store data internally?

HydroRIG can store sensor data in the event of a communication lapse. Upon connection reestablishment, the stored data can be backfilled in HydroSphere, preventing data gaps. The internal memory is 32 MB.

    4. Is my data safe and secure when collected with HydroRIG?

Yes, HydroRIG uses advanced security protocols to transmit data. HydroSphere also provides top-tier data security, hosted on Amazon’s AWS Data Center, with password-protected account access, customizable user roles for restricting or granting permissions, and encrypted data exports.

    5. How do I know which cellular option I need?

HydroRIG is available in two modem options, CAT-1 (PN:615531) or CAT-M1 (PN:615530). CAT-1 offers higher bandwidth, lower latency, and efficient power consumption on LTE networks; CAT-M1 offers even lower power consumption, though with lower bandwidth and higher latency, on extended LP-WAN coverage. In most cases, the CAT-M1 model is sufficient for typical applications using 1–2 sensors, sampling every 15 minutes, and transmitting once per hour. Applications with more than three connected sensors, higher data volumes, or more frequent transmissions may require more bandwidth and would benefit from the CAT-1 model, which supports higher data plan capabilities.

CAT-1 units use two antennas connected to the ‘Cellular’ and ‘Diversity’ ports, while CAT-M1 units use a single antenna connected to the ‘Cellular’ port. You will need to specify the radio technology of your HydroRIG (CAT-1 or CAT-M1) when setting up service with your carrier.

We recommend using only Mobile Network Operators (MNOs). In North America, Xylem is certified with AT&T and is pending certification with Verizon. In Europe, we recommend MNOs such as Deutsche Telekom, Orange, Vodafone, Telenor, Telefónica, O2, EE, and Three.

You may use your own SIM card and cellular plan, or purchase one from Xylem when ordering your device. Please note that CAT-M1 data plans may not be available in all areas, we recommend checking with your local provider for coverage and compatibility.

For more information, please refer to your preferred carrier’s coverage map: AT&T (4G Coverage CAT-1 / LTE-M CAT-M1), Verizon, Deutsche Telekom, Orange, Vodafone, Telenor, Telefónica, O2, EE, and Three.

When using European carriers other than Vodafone or Deutsche Telekom, you may be required to manually enter the MNOs specific APNs using Xylem's Local Configurator desktop software.

    6. What features does HydroRIG currently not support?

At launch, HydroRIG will not support internal GPS functionality, the RS-232 camera/sensor port, and the serial Comm Port for external modem/GOES/Iridium transmitter configuration. These features will become functional in an upcoming firmware update that will wirelessly distribute to all powered HydroRIG units.

    7. Is HydroSphere the only way to view data collected by HydroRIG?

No, while HydroRIG is designed to work seamlessly with HydroSphere, enabling quick deployments with minimal configuration, we understand you may wish to host your data elsewhare, which is why you also have the option to transfer or port data out of HydroSphere and into another data platform via SFTP transfer or through HydroLINK API. You will need to maintain an active account in HydroSphere to access data collected by HydroRIG, even if it is ultimately transferred.

    8. Which Xylem sensors work with HydroRIG?

All Xylem sensors are compatible with HydroRIG, including YSI, SonTek, Aanderaa, and GWI products. Most third-party environmental sensors are also compatible. Exclusions are few and include, for example, some analog sensors that use signals other than 4-20 mA.

The HydroSphere Instrument Library currently contains 10 instruments with pre-configured settings, which makes connecting to commonly used sensors like the YSI EXO Sonde, SonTek SL Series, Gill GMX600 meteorological sensor, and tipping bucket rain gauges quick and convenient. The Instrument Library will continue to grow with new sensors being added over time.

    9. How many sensors can I connect?

You may connect up to ten SDI-12, two Digital, one Analog, one RS-485 (EXO with native YSIP), and one RS-232*, for a total of 15 sensors.

    10. Can I connect my non-YSI sonde?

Yes, a water quality sonde that can output data via SDI-12 can communicate with HydroRIG.

    11. Do I need a Signal Output Adapter (SOA) to connect an EXO Sonde?

No, if you want to connect your EXO Sonde via the native sonde output signal (YSIP), you can wire your EXO flying lead cable (PN: 599008-xx) directly into the HydroRIG RS-485 port. If you would like to use SDI-12 output, you may need to use a DCP-Signal Output Adapter (PN: 599820) to wire your sonde to the SDI-12 port if you are not using an EXO3 or EXO3S Sonde which has native SDI-12.

    12. Where can HydroRIG be deployed?

HydroRIG is currently certified with carriers in North America, the United Kingdom, and Continental Europe. Please check back for updates, as we are continuously working to increase coverage worldwide.

*The internal GPS, RS-232 port, and external Comm port functionalities are currently in development and will not be available at launch.
