How pH and ORP Sensors Work: Principles and Practice Webinar

The pH of a water body can affect nearly all aquatic life in a system, and the oxidative-reductive potential is a related, but underappreciated parameter particularly in environmental and wastewater applications.

In this educational webinar, we will discuss:

  • Reasons to measure both pH and ORP,
  • The principles of operation of Ion Selective Electrodes (ISEs) as they’ve been adapted from the laboratory to the field,
  • Best practices for maintaining and troubleshooting measurements, and
  • Real-world practice to demonstrate both the value and limitations of field-deployed pH and ORP sensors.

Ben Sutter

YSI Technical Applications and Support Specialist

Ben Sutter has been utilizing pH measurements since his time as an undergraduate lab tech at Sinclair Community College; he then earned his bachelor’s degree in Chemistry at Wright State. He has been supporting instrumentation that measures pH and ORP for 5 years as part of YSI’s Technical Support team. Ben had a hand in editing and localizing YSI’s “The pH Handbook”, and acts as tech support’s chemist. As demo coordinator, he has calibrated, replaced, maintained, and occasionally destroyed hundreds of pH and ORP probes. Ben loves to educate, and has trained everyone from 4th graders to industry professionals about pH and other water quality parameters.
