Harmful Algal Blooms (HABs) are highly prevalent in Clear Lake, California, making it one of North America's most closely monitored lakes. While temperature and eutrophication contribute to HABs, Clear Lake's complex structure makes it difficult to determine the exact roles of water quality and other environmental factors in influencing the dominant algal species and the characteristics of the blooms. This case study highlights the value of high-resolution, temporally- and spatially-integrated data collected by an autonomous underwater vehicle (the YSI i3XO EcoMapper) alongside traditional methods to understand these contributing factors better.
