Wastewater – The Essentials of Phosphorus Removal in Wastewater

Join YSI experts, Laura St. Pierre and Benjamin Barker, as they review phosphorus removal strategies in municipal wastewater applications. This live educational webinar will be 50 minutes with 10 minutes for Q&A. At the conclusion of the webinar, attendees will receive a certificate awarding 0.1 CEUs from the International Association for Continuing Education and Training (IACET). IACET CEUs are often transferable, so check with your local association to see if IACET credit is accepted.

Phosphorus, primarily existing as phosphate, is a nutrient of concern for many wastewater operators. NPDES permitting has placed effluent phosphorus limits on Water Resource Recovery Facilities (WRRFs) to protect our lakes and rivers from eutrophication. To meet these limits operators need to implement processes to remove phosphorus.  However, phosphorus occurs as several different forms throughout the wastewater process and understanding its distribution is vital to monitoring and removal. One important tool for phosphorus removal is an online orthophosphate analyzer for monitoring effluent orthophosphate and controlling phosphorus removal strategies.  Chemical removal, enhanced biological phosphorus removal (EBPR), and tertiary filtration are the common strategies for removing phosphorus from wastewater, each having their own advantages and disadvantages. This webinar will describe these phosphorus removal strategies, demonstrate how online orthophosphate analyzers can benefit the removal process, and review several case studies of successfully implemented phosphorus removal strategies at WRRFs.

Attendees will be able to:

  • Describe how phosphorus behaves in wastewater and why we want to remove it.
  • Differentiate between phosphorus removal strategies and discuss the pros and cons of each.
  • Apply online orthophosphate monitoring to phosphorus removal applications.
