General Summary and Basic Function​
The sensor technology group manager leads a technical team in the areas of applied research for new sensing technology ahead of the New Product Development process, validation testing and specification determination as part of New Product Development, and evaluation of new and emerging technology.

Job Specifications and Work Performed

  • Work with R&D management, Marketing, and Xylem Analytics Advanced Technology Team to define applied research projects that are aligned with the Xylem goals
  • Work closely with marketing and Xylem Analytics Advanced Technology Team to develop and maintain a technology roadmap to provide long term guidance of applied research efforts.
  • Document project justification, milestones, and key personnel via project charter
  • Function as the technical lead for feasibility efforts to assess the applicability of technologies for future New Product Development
  • Work with Xylem Analytics Advanced Technology Team to rapidly assess emerging technologies from 3rd party sources
  • Work closely with R&D at the engineering validation level to support New Product Development
  • Provide technical support for manufacturing engineering and current products
  • Lead a group of highly skilled technical staff
  • Guide technical staff career development by providing growth and leadership opportunities
  • Provide performance appraisals for direct reports
  • Provide monthly reports on technical progress

Experience & Academic Requirements

  • MS or Ph.D. in Chemistry, Physics, or Biological Sciences preferred.
  • At least 10 years experience in assigned science or engineering discipline
  • Strong grasp of complex scientific principles spanning physics, chemistry, and biology
  • Knowledge of electrochemical/optical sensing techniques required.
  • Experience in leading applied research projects
  • Knowledge of laboratory instrumentation (pH meter, spectrophotometer, etc.) and common chemistry laboratory practices.

Desired Skills   

  • Ability to apply theory and hardware knowledge to practical aspects of industry and product lines.
  • Ability to learn advanced concepts regarding electrochemical and optical-based sensors.
  • Ability to design experiments to test and/or confirm sensor function.
  • Ability to develop and manage independent research program.
  • Must be able to demonstrate successful project and resource management
  • Excellent people and teamwork skills
  • Strong written and verbal communication skills
  • Ability to discuss technical issues with a broad audience
  • Ability to rapidly assess new technology and determine potential for use in YSI products
  • Able to multi-task, prioritize, and manage time effectively
  • Strong interpersonal and persuasive skills, in a team oriented environment.
  • Ability to work effectively with all levels of employees and management.

Working Condition

  • General office and engineering laboratory environment​
  • 8:00AM to 5:00PM Monday through Friday
  • Less than 10% travel required
