While the end result of desalination is clean and useful water, there are several aspects of the process which need to be carefully controlled and monitored so as not to negatively impact the environment. It is at these pre- and post-treatment stages where YSI instruments can provide valuable data.

Feasibility/Design: The study or research phase where water currents and salinity need to be monitored, measured, and modeled. A water quality sonde, monitoring buoy, and/or current meter can reliably provide the required baseline data.

 

In-Process: Outside the plant, a water quality monitoring system can monitor turbidity or salinity levels right before the water is drawn into the plant. Inside the desalination plant, a water quality data display can be used to check the intake, pre-filtered, and/or treated water.

 

Effluent/Compliance: Water quality sensors, datalogger, and buoys with telemetry can be used to monitor brine discharge at the outfall in order to maintain compliance.

Compact Sonde for Field Sampling

 

The YSI 6820 V2 is a cost-effective sonde for profiling and spot-checking in rivers, lakes, wetlands, wells, estuaries, and coastal waters. Two versions are available:

  • 6820 V2-1 has one optical port, conductivity/temperature port, Rapid Pulse DO port, pH/ORP port, and 3 ISE ports
  • 6820 V2-2 has 2 optical ports, conductivity/temperature port, pH port, and one ISE port.

Small Package - Economical Sampling or Logging


Both the YSI 600XL (sampling) and the YSI 600 XLM (logging) are economical solutions in small packages for surface water and groundwater applications. Both easily fit into 2-inch wells and measure a range of fundamental parameters, including oxygen - with the YSI Rapid Pulse™ stirring-independent dissolved oxygen sensor - and level, using a highly-accurate vented sensor.
